The final of the WTA Prudential Hong Kong Open is set with two unseeded players facing off as Leylah Fernandez takes on Katerina Siniakova. This is the first time making the final of this event for both players. Fernandez advanced to this stage after a 2-0 victory over 37th-ranked Anna Blinkova in the semi-final. It’s been a fine tournament for the Canadian who also knocked out promising young talent Mirra Andreeva as well as top-seeded Victoria Azarenka. This represents the first final for Fernandez in 2023. Her previous best finishes were a semi-final in the W100 Madrid in May and a quarter-final in Guadalajara three weeks ago. The 21-year-old 60th-ranked pro has a record of 34 wins and 23 losses on the year for a winning percentage of 59.6%. This is just below her career mark of 62.5%. This improves to 61.5% when playing on hard courts in 2023 where Fernandez has done most of her work, racking up 24 wins in 39 appearances.

85th-ranked Katerina Siniakova has been on a strong run of form in the Asian portion of the WTA circuit so far. She made it to the quarter-finals of the Ningbo Open and recovered from a first-round exit in the Beijing Open with a finals appearance in Hong Kong. Her best result of 2023 up to this point was in June where she was crowned champion of the Bad Homburg Open in Germany. It was her only title of the year and first since her win in Portoroz, Slovenia in September of 2022. The 27-year-old advanced to the final with a straight sets victory over 42nd-ranked Martina Trevisan in the semi-finals. The win was Siniakova’s third 2-0 victory in her four matches as she has dropped only a single set in this tournament. The Czech pro sits just above .500 on the season with her record of 20 wins and 18 defeats.
