Unseeded Leylah Fernandez will take on qualifier Clara Tauson on Wednesday in the second round at the French Open. Fernandez defeated 21st seed Magda Linette 2-1 to reach this round. It was the 17th win of an unstable season so far for her. The Canadian has lost 12 times in 2023 with five of her losses coming on clay. Despite the win, Fernandez is down 39 places in the live ranking to number 88 after losing 360 ranking points. She recorded her best result here last season by going all the way to the quarterfinals. Fernandez will seek to equal this feat at least, so as not to lose any more points. A win here will book her a duel against either lucky loser Elina Avanesyan or wildcard Leolia Jeanjean next

Clara Tauson is in superb form at the moment. Once again, she’s risen from the qualifying rounds to reach the main draw at Roland Garros. The Dane has never managed to go past this round and will hope the third attempt comes with better luck. Tauson has dropped only one set in the four matches she has played in Paris. She defeated unseeded Aliaksandra Sasnovich in the first round in straight sets, relinquishing only two games in the process. Her performances here have lifted her right back to the WTA top 100, placing at number 93 in the live ranking. Tauson has a record of 24 wins and nine losses so far in the season, 11 of those victories coming on clay. Her highlight of the season however was on indoor carpet where she has one title secured in the ITF.
