It wasn't just Emma Raducanu who became a star at the US Open. Leylah Fernandez was the runner-up and also looks a future top ten player. The Canadian is the number 23 seed at Indian Wells and takes on Alize Cornet for a place in the third round against either ninth seeded Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova or Madison Keys. Raducanu may have beaten Fernandez in the final but the Canadian had the better wins in the US Open. Fernandez beat Naomi Osaka, Angelique Kerber, Eiina Svitolina and Aryna Sabalenka on her way to the final. The 19-year-old has won a tournament this year with success in a hard court event held in Monterrey seven months ago.

Alize Cornet is ranked 64th in the world, 36 places below her opponent. Cornet was as high as 11th in 2009 when Fernandez was just six-years old. The French player beat qualifier Elena-Gabriela Ruse in the first round 6-3 7-6. There have been plenty of early exits for her this year but a few highlights too. June saw her reach the semi-final of a grass court event in Berlin, beating both Garbine Muguruza and Bianca Andreescu (the defending champion in this event). August saw her get to the final of a WTA 125 tournament in Chicago, losing to Elina Svitolina. There was also a quarter final in Luxembourg last month but Cornet lost in the first round in her last tournament. Back Fernandez to get the win here.
