World number 190 Ajla Tomljanovic will face sixth seed Leylah Fernandez in the quarter-finals of the 2024 Birmingham Classic.

The winner here will advance to play either Anastasia Potapova, Harriet Dart or Barbora Krejcikova for a place in the final. Fernandez is coming off a demanding three-set battle with the qualifier Viktorija Golubic.

The match lasted two hours and 21 minutes and saw the Canadian come from a set down to earn the win. A quarter-finalist in Doha earlier in the year, Fernandez has set her best record in Birmingham by advancing this far. This has enabled her to move up three places in the live ranking to 30th.

Ajla Tomljanovic is seeking to advance to her first tour semi-final since 2019. The Australian also had to come from a set down to win her second-round tie.

This was against the unseeded Zhu Lin whom she defeated 6-7, 6-1, 6-4. Tomljanovic has been in excellent form on grass where six of her total nine victories have come.

Before arriving to end a two-season hiatus from Birmingham, the 31-year-old had made the quarter-finals at Surbiton as a qualifier. Tomljanovic’s victory over Lin has propelled her 20 places in the live ranking to 170th. Another win for the former world number 32, who is playing with a protected ranking, will move her into the top 150 places.
