They will battle in the first round with the winner playing Beatriz Haddad Maia for a place in the quarterfinals. Lesia Tsurenko is returning to the tour after an almost two-week break to deal with an elbow problem. The Ukrainian has been forced to withdraw from her last two scheduled fixtures and last played in Doha. She will hope to have fully recovered to continue with her dominance in this fixture. Tsurenko has defeated Boulter the three times they have met. Their last encounter was last season at Indian Wells. The 34-year-old has compiled a 5-3 record with all eight matches being played on hard courts. She is set to start the week ranked 36th in the WTA after dropping two places in the live ranking.

Katie Boulter will start the week in 49th place. She will hope a sustained run in this event propels her into a new career world ranking. The Briton has had a decent start to the year and has won six of the nine matches she has played. Five of her wins have come on hard courts but so too have two of her defeats. The 27-year-old is also returning to the tour after a lengthy time away. She has played for almost a month and was last on the court in Linz. Boulter hasn’t yet lost a first-round tie in any event this season and this should have her confident of a win here.
