Lesia Tsurenko has returned to the Rogers Cup to end a six-year absence from the competition's main draw. A quarter-finalist here back in 2015, Tsurenko last played in the main draw of this WTA 1000 event in 2018.

The Ukrainian began what is her fourth appearance here with a come-from-behind win over Bianca Andreescu. She had lost the first set 6-0 before regrouping to win the final two sets against the former Canadian Open champion.

This win improved Tsurenko’s record to 10-13 and also moved her six places in the live ranking to 79th. The 35-year-old defeated Kalinskaya in their only showdown to date, in Thailand last year.

Tenth seed Anna Kalinskaya has been in fine form this year and is the favorite to win this match. The Russian has compiled a 29-13 record. She has produced two runners-up finishes in Dubai and Berlin as well as a quarter-final run at the Australian Open.

Kalinskaya also made the second week of competing in Miami and Wimbledon. This form has thrust her into the WTA top 20 where she is currently placed 16th in the live ranking. Kalinskaya, making her debut in Toronto, began her campaign here with a 2-0 win over another qualifier, Louisa Chirico.

That was her 19th win on hard courts. The winner of this second career meeting between these two will play Daria Kasatkina, Caroline Dolehide or Amanda Anisimova next.
