Leicester Tigers will be looking to get the 2023-24 European Champions Cup started on a positive note when they face the Stormers on Sunday afternoon. In the previous Champions Cup season, Leicester Tigers secured three victories and suffered one defeat in their pool matches. They progressed to the Round of 16 by defeating Edinburgh in a home fixture, but their journey concluded with a quarter-final loss away to Leinster. Although lacking the X-factor of the Stormers, the Tigers boast significant power and poise in their squad. Riding a three-match winning streak in the Premiership, they will be aiming for a third consecutive home win when they face the Capetonians. The team is currently seventh in the Gallagher Premiership standings with four wins and four defeats. Not to mention, they feature the notable presence of Handre Pollard, who will be mixing it up here against several of his World Cup-winning Springbok teammates.
The Stormers face a challenging start to their campaign for the second consecutive year. They are starting the competition away from home and find themselves grouped in the Pool of Death alongside Leicester, Sale, Leinster, La Rochelle, and Stade Francais. In the current United Rugby Championship, the Stormers have struggled, winning only two out of their seven matches. While they secured victories in a derby against the Lions and a home match against the Scarlets, they lost all four of their tour matches against Glasgow, Benetton, Munster, and Cardiff, placing them no higher than tenth in the standings. In the previous Champions Cup season, the Stormers won three and lost one of their pool matches, advancing to the Round of 16 by defeating Harlequins in Cape Town. However, like Leicester, their journey ended in the quarter-finals with a heavy defeat away to Exeter.
