Fifth seed Daniil Medvedev and qualifier Learner Tien will meet next at the Australian Open. They will battle in the second round with the winner playing Corentin Moutet or Mitchell Krueger next. Below is our prediction for this match.

Learner Tien is having a historic campaign in Melbourne where he is making his debut. The American, playing in the main draw at a major for only the third time, earned a 3-2 victory over Camilo Ugo Carabelli.

That win was his first at a Grand Slam. At just 19, he has become one of the youngest Americans to win a match in Melbourne. Tien, who has moved up to 108th in the live ranking, a new career high, has won four of five matches this season.

Medvedev looked out of sorts in his opener and will be eager to put up a better account here.

The Russian, who has made it to the final in Melbourne in three of the last four seasons, needed a decider against Kasidit Samrej. Playing against a player ranked outside the world’s top 400, Medvedev lost two of the opening three sets.

This could easily be down to match fitness as he was playing his first match of the campaign. The world number five is defending 1300 points that he won last season in his run to the final.
