Laslo Djere looks to build on his big win over top seed Casper Ruud in the Auckland Classic. He now takes on fellow unseeded player Constant Lestienne in the quarter finals. The winner takes on either Richard Gasquet or David Goffin in the last four. Both are also unseeded so we're guaranteed a non-seed in this final warm-up event before the Australian Open. In fact, there's only one seed left in the tournament, second seeded Cameron Norrie. Djere began this week ranked 70th in the world but is up to 67th and a win here could see him rise up to 58th place. The Serb didn't get the new year off to a great start as he lost to Maximilian Materer (ranked 159th at the time) in the last 16 of the tournament held in Pune. He struggled initially in Auckland losing the first set of his first round match against Jaume Munar. However, he recovered to win in three sets. That set up a second round match against top seeded Casper Ruud and again he dropped the first set. Another great comeback was on the way though and he eventually got through after a third set tie-break.

Constant Lestienne is the world number 65 but this run to the Auckland quarter final has seen him go up to 59th in the live rankings and that's a career high Another win can see him go up another six places on the list. The Frenchman is playing his second tournament of the year. The first was in Adelaide but he had the misfortune of drawing Novak Djokovic in the first round and lost, only winning five games. He's had an easier draw this week and in the first round beat Pedro Cachin for the loss of only four games. It was tougher in the second round though as he lost the first set 6-1 to qualifier fellow Frenchman Gregoire Barrere. He won the second set on a tie-break, then clinched the match 7-5 in the final set. Another tight match looks likely here.
