Kyle Edmund vs Dominic Thiem Prediction & Betting Tips - ATP Mutua Madrid Open
by Devesh Jaganath | in Tennis Predictions
Kyle Edmund and Dominic Thiem will continue to work their way back to full fitness following long-term injuries when the pair face off this week in the opening round of the Mutua Madrid Open. Dominic Thiem has fallen from the top 10 player rankings in the world in 2020 to 111th this year, but following a strong performance in Munich last week, the Austrian is now back within the top 100, currently ranked 93rd in the world. Thiem is a fan of the clay court and has already participated in as many as six tournaments on clay this season, with his best performances coming in Estoril and Munich, where he reached the semi-final stages in each tournament. Despite having an underwhelming record of 6-6 for the year on this surface, Thiem has managed a few notable wins over the likes of Ben Shelton and, more recently, Marc Andrea Huesler just last week. Thiem has beaten this opponent convincingly on this surface once before, back in 2017 in Barcelona, and will come into this hoping he can pull off another victory over the Brit.
Ranked 498th in the world, Kyle Edmund continues his battle to return to the heights he achieved in 2018 when he reached his peak rank of 14th in the world. Plagued by injuries in recent times, Edmund has struggled to find top gear this season and currently has a record of 2-7 for the year and 2-3 on the clay. The Brit failed to make it past the first round of most of the tournaments he’s participated in this year but showed minor signs of improvement on the clay surface two weeks ago at the M25 Santa Margherita di Pula tournament, where he managed to reach the quarter-final stages, but was beaten by qualifier Pietro Marino in three sets. Following another early failure in Munich last week, Edmund will know that he is up against it here in Madrid against a strong opponent and will do well to avoid another first-round exit in this one.
