British number one Johanna Konta, who is of course no stranger to Australia, knocked out Venus Williams in the First Round. Konta played well but Williams did appear to have a few injury problems, a win is a win though and the British player has a good chance here of making it through to the Third Round/ This time last year her Chinese opponent was ranked in the top 40 but has since slid down to her current ranking of 83. She beat Carina Witthoeft in straight sets in the First Round. Already this year she has a win over Petra Kvitova who lost the first set to her and then retired. Last year wasn't a great one for her in the Grand Slams with a series of First Round losses.She didn't reach the last 128 in the French Open though and that's because in the final qualifying round the Chinese player lost in straight sets to Konta. The British woman will have had her confidence lifted after beating Venus Williams and is ranked 36 places above her opponent so can get a straight sets win here.
