Wildcard Kevin Anderson and unseeded Jordan Thompson will on Tuesday meet in the first round at the Mubadala Citi DC Open. Anderson is playing his fourth match of the season after his surprise decision to come out of retirement. The South African retired in May last season but made a u-turn after over a year in Newport. He played three matches at the tournament and won twice. Anderson has won all three previous encounters against Thompson the last of which was two seasons ago at Indian Wells. All three matches took place on hard court which should give Anderson belief of starting things off here with a win. He is currently ranked 652nd in the live ranking. Anderson is a former finalist in Washington, achieving the feat in 2017.

Jordan Thompson will target a win here as this could be his final shot at winning against Anderson. The Australian is having a strong campaign thus far and has won 31 of the 50 matches he has played. Thirteen of those victories have come on hard court as well as one of the two challenger titles he has won. Thompson has struggled with his form though in recent matches. In his last 10 fixtures, he has won as many matches as he has lost. He arrives for this match after his opening-round elimination in Newport. Thompson has dropped seven places in the live ranking to number 70. The winner of this first-round tie will play Adria Mannarino in the second round.
