An all-Japanese affair awaits at the Miami Open on Thursday, when Kei Nishikori and Yoshihito Nishioka face off. The two meet in the first round, marking a second meeting between them. We have a prediction for this match below.
Former world number four Nishikori has struggled with injuries over the past year and will be hoping for a calmer 2025. He has already graced one final in 2025 but fell to Alexandre Muller in Hong Kong.
Nishikori has also made the final in Miami before (2016) and will hope to go all the way this time. He is coming from a semi-final defeat in the Phoenix Challenger, leaving him on a 10-7 record.
Nishioka has also had fitness issues and in recent times hasn’t seemed fully okay. He had to spend some time out after his first round win at Delray Beach.
The 29-year-old pulled out of the scheduled second round game and also withdrew from Indian Wells. He makes a return looking to improve on his current record that stands at 9-4 for the season.
Before his latest injury woes, Nishioka graced the Dallas Open quarter-finals. That remains his highlight for the season so far. He has advanced past the first round in four events now, only failing at Adelaide this season.
In his only previous meeting with Nishikori, he won in straight sets at Cincinnati in 2019.
