Britain's Katie Boulter takes on Diane Parry for a place in round two of the 2023 US Open. The winner could face seeded opposition next if seventh seed Caroline Garcia can beat qualifier Wang Yafan. Boulter is ranked 61st which is only one place below her career high achieved earlier this month. The British number one is up to 58th in the live rankings but arrives in New York looking to win her first match in the main draw of the US Open. Her only previous main draw appearance was two years ago when being beaten by Liudmila Samsonova. Her best performance in a Grand Slam is reaching the third round at Wimbledon in both 2022 and 2023. It's been a breakthrough year for the 27-year-old who was ranked as low as 157th five months ago. The year began with an ITF hard court title won in Canberra. Another two finals weres reached in May and a grass court tournament won the following month.

Diane Parry is ranked 88th and this is her second match against Boulter. The other was on a hard court in the qualifying rounds of this year's Indian Wells tournament. Boulter won that in straight sets for the loss of only six games. Parry is playing in the main draw of the US Open for the third time but is yet to win a match. The only Grand Slam third round appearance for the French player was at Roland Garros last year. 2023 has seen her win two of her five Grand Slam matches. Two recent hard court events haven't gone well for Parry with two losses in three matches. Clay is her best surface and on hard courts, only one ITF semi-final has been reached this year.
