Fourth seed Cori Gauff will on Sunday play world number 34 Katie Boulter in the third round at the China Open. Victory here for either will set up a fourth-round duel with Naomi Osaka or Katie Volynets. Read on for our prediction of this third match between Gauff and Boulter.

Katie Boulter had a solid start to the tournament, seeing off Taylor Townsend in straight sets. After an inconsistent last few weeks, the number one Briton will hope to put up a winning streak and possibly challenge here.

Before this tournament, Boulter, who is on a 28-17 record, had lost five times in eight outings. The win over Townsend moved her one place forward in the live rankings, to 33rd.

Boulter defeated Gauff three seasons ago on a hard court at the one-off Gippsland Trophy.

Cori Gauff avenged the loss to Boulter in Melbourne, winning their second career meeting last year in Montreal. She will thus enter this match fully psyched up for another win.

Gauff, who made the semi-finals here in her debut appearance last year, defeated Clara Burel in straight sets in her tournament opener. That was the 42nd win for the world number six. Gauff hasn’t struggled to win matches as much as she has done to add to her trophy cabinet.

Last year’s US Open champion, she has managed just one title which came at the start of the season in Auckland. That is also the only tour final she has played in so far. Gauff has lost in five semi-finals, two at Grand Slam level and two at WTA 1000.
