World number 72 Katie Boulter takes on the fifth seed Coco Gauff in the National Bank Open second round. Possible third round opponents for the winner include Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova or the returning Caroline Wozniaki. Boulter had to qualify to get into the main draw of this WTA 1000 outdoor hard court tournament. The British number one had few problems doing so and only dropped ten games in her two qualifying matches. That took her into the first round where Boulter beat wild card Rebecca Marino 6-3 6-1. That win has taken her up to a career high 58th in the live rankings. not bad considering in April the Brit was only ranked 154th. This year has seen her win an ITF title on grass and reach two others on hard courts and carpet. Her best in a WTA hard court event has been reaching the last 32 of the ATX Open in Houston. This is her second match against Gauff and surprisingly she won their only meeting. That was in Australia in 2021 with Boulter coming from a set down to get the win.

Coco Gauff comes into this tournament fresh from winning the Washington hard court title. The American was ranked seventh at the start of this tournament and also holds that position in the Live WTA Race. Gauff beat three top 20 ranked players in Washington last week, including beating Maria Sakkari in the final. The 19-year-old didn't lose a single set in her four matches. It was her second hard court title of the year after winning in Auckland seven months ago. Gauff is in top form and can win this match in straight sets.
