Second seed Beatriz Haddad Maia will begin her San Diego Open campaign with a second-round showdown against unseeded Katie Boulter. Katie Boulter is making her debut in this WTA 500 event. The Briton began the tournament with a straight-sets victory over fellow unseeded player Lesia Tsurenko. She lost four games as she earned her seventh win of the year. Boulter has been in good form this year as she has compiled a 7-3 record. She however hasn’t gone past the second round at any event. The 27-year-old, who has won six of eight matches on hard courts, has moved into a career-high WTA ranking after her first-round win. She is now ranked 45th and can move up to 42nd with victory here.

Beatriz Haddad Maia is witnessing a dip in form and will be eager to correct her recent underperformance. The Brazilian has lost her last three matches and this has seen her record get tied at 6-6. She last won in Abu Dhabi where she produced a semi-final finish. Maia made her San Diego debut last season and made the quarterfinals. The world number 13 is coming off a first-round exit in Dubai. She lost in three sets to eventual winner Jasmine Paolini. This was more than a week ago, she will hope to have reenergized as she attempts to not slip into a losing record. The winner here will then face either Donna Vekic or Marina Stakusic in the quarterfinals.
