Ninth seed Caroline Garcia will begin her China Open campaign on Monday with a first-round showdown with the qualifier Kateryna Baindl. The winner will play either unseeded Marie Bouzkova or qualifier Yulia Putintseva next. Kateryna Baindl won her two qualifiers without dropping a set and is now in the main draw here for the first time. To advance to this round, the Ukrainian defeated Yanina Wickmayer by the loss of eight games. The win was her 18th of the season but she still remains with a losing record as she has lost 19 times. Baindl has registered 11 of her victories on hard courts. The highlight of her season however came on clay in Budapest where she recorded her second career tour final and finished as runner-up. Baindl is currently ranked 89th in the live ranking.
Caroline Garcia has seen her position in the WTA top 10 threatened by some lackluster showings this season. The former world number four is currently ranked 10th after recording a nervy 36-23 record. But as she is a former China Open champion, the Frenchwoman will be confident of a prolonged stay here. Garcia triumphed in Beijing back in 2017 to win the second of her three WTA 1000 titles. An 11-time tour champion, Garcia has won three of her tour titles in China. She was last here in 2019 and arrives after her quarterfinal elimination in Tokyo. Before that, Garcia had made the last four in Guadalajara. The 29-year-old has won 20 of 35 matches on hard courts this season and has one runner-up finish on the surface.
