Tomova is at 61st in the live rankings and that's nine places below her opponent. The Bulgarian caused a surprise in the last round when beating second seed Olga Danilovic in straight sets, both won 7-5.

Before that, she'd had a tough first round match and needed three sets to get past Mayar Sherif after losing the first set. It's a return to form as before this week, the 29-year-old had lost seen of her last nine matches.

Katerina Siniakova won her only previous match against Tomova but that was played nine years ago. The 28-year-old Czech had lost her last three matches before this tournament. This is the first time she's made it past round one of a tournament in 2025.

It's been a tough route to the last eight with both her matches in Cluj going to a final set. Round one saw her beat Francesca Jones and then she needed to come from behind to defeat Caroline Dolehide.
