Unseeded players Katerina Siniakova and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova will face off on Friday at the Hong Kong Tennis Open. The winner of this quarterfinal will then play either Elise Mertens or Martina Trevisan for a chance at the final. Katerina Siniakova defeated fellow unseeded player Kamilla Rakhimova in three sets to advance to this round. She won the last two sets after failing to win a tiebreaker in the opening set. The win allowed her to tie her record for the season and will now target to win more than she has lost. Siniakova has won 18 matches which is the same number of matches she has lost. The majority of her victories, 12, have come on hard courts but so too have 15 of her defeats. Siniakova, who is back here after seven seasons, is ranked 82nd in the live ranking after a three-place jump. The Czech won the last time that she and Pavlyuchenkova were paired up against each other.

Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova has won three of the four meetings between her and Siniakova. Though it is seven years since her last win in this series, she will be confident of extending her advantage. Pavlyuchenkova has fared much better this season than her soon-to-be opponent and has compiled a 24-16 record. She has made it to two semifinals though a quarterfinal finish at Roland Garros is arguably the highlight of her season. Pavlyuchenkova is a former Hong Kong champion. She won the title the last time she participated in the event, which was six years ago. The Russian number eight has however struggled on hard courts and has won only six of 13 matches on the surface. She defeated second seed Beatriz Haddad Maia in three sets in the last round. The victory bumped her up four places to 57th in the live ranking.
