Karolina Pliskova has a very consistent record in the US Open. The  25th seed takes on unseeded Clara Burel and hopes that a sixth US Open quarter final can be reached in 2023. That might be difficult though as the winner of this match will face second seeded Aryna Sabalenka if she can get past Jodie Anna Burrage in round two. Pliskova was the runner-up here seven years ago and has reached four more US Open quarter finals since then, losing them all. This year has seen her get to the last eight of the Australian Open making in nine quarter finals in hard court Grand Slams. It hasn't gone so well on other surfaces with two first round losses at Roland Garros and Wimbledon. An unwanted hat-trick was avoided when Pliskova beat qualifier Elena-Gabriela Ruse in the first round of this tournament, losing only five games. 

Clara Burel began this tournament ranked 62nd in the world which is one place below her career high. A win over Pliskova will take her into the third round of the US Open for the second year in a row. The French player's only other third round in a Grand Slam was at Roland Garros three years ago. The 22-year-old beat Caroline Dolehide in straight sets in round one. Burel is down to 73rd in the live rankings as she has the points to defend from reaching the third round here last year. Her best form of late has been on clay and we go for Pliskova to get the win and progress to the third round.
