Karolina Pliskova hasn't won a title since January 2020 and lost three this year. The Czech is the fourth seed in Montreal and takes on unseeded Camila Giorgi in the final. Pliskova lost in Rome (without winning a game) and the Wimbledon final to Ashleigh Barty. This week has seen her in good form with wins over Donna Vekic (after losing the first set),  Amanda Anisimova, Sara-Sorribes Tormo and then top seeded Aryna Sabalenka in the semi-final. the world number six will go up to fourth when the new rankings list is published. Pliskova has won five of her eight previous matches against Giorgi. However, the Italian has beaten her twice in recent months with wins in Eastbourne and the Tokyo Olympics.

Camila Giorgi had a late night on Saturday when beating Jessica Pegula in her semi-final. The match went to three sets but it was her American opponent who faded as Giorgi won the final set 6-1. The Italian (who was ranked 26th three years ago) began this tournament as the world number 71. The live rankings have her up to 44th and Giorgi will rise to 34th if winning this final. Giorgi has won two WTA titles, the last being a couple of years ago. The Italian reached the last eight at the Tokyo Olympics and like her opponent has a recent win over Aryna Sablenka on her way to the last four in Eastbourne. This week has seen her beat three seeds (Elise Mertens, Petra Kvitova and Coco Gauff) as well as Nadia Pororoska and Pegula in the semi-final. Will that late finish count against her?
