World number 43 Karolina Muchova and 27th seed Irina-Camelia Begu have an encounter on Friday in the third round of the French Open. Muchova has reached this stage for the second successive season. It comes courtesy of a 2-1 win over Nadia Podoroska in the last round. That win moved her up five places to 38th in the live ranking. Muchova has never gone past the third round at Roland Garros. After beating Maria Sakkari in the first round, she will be confident of setting a new personal record. The Czech has been decent so far this season. She has a record of 21 wins and seven losses with six of her wins coming on clay.

This will be the third-ever meeting between Irina-Camelia Begu and Muchova and the third on clay. Advancing from this tie will set up a fourth-round showdown with either qualifier Clara Tauson or lucky loser Elina Avanesyan. Begu has won the previous two meetings, the latest coming in April at the Madrid Open. The first meeting between the two took place in the second round of this same tournament four seasons ago. Begu is yet to drop a set in Paris and dominated Sara Errani in the second round without dropping a game in the final set. The world number 27 had an up-and-down season and before arriving at Roland Garros had only one more win than her total nine losses.
