Unseeded Karolina Muchova and Anastasia Potapova will face off in the 2024 US Open third round on Saturday. Ahead of the match, here’s our preview and prediction. Muchova reached the semis here last year and hopes to improve on that.

Injuries have hampered her since the tail end of last year and she made a belated start to this season during the grass campaign. She has however been in strong form and finished as runner-up in Palermo.

Muchova has had a strong start to her return to New York, winning both her matches in straights. She defeated two-time US Open champion Naomi Osaka in the second round.

Currently placed 154th in the live ranking, Muchova has won two of the three times she has faced off with Potapova.

Anastasia Potapova has been in superb form in the last two weeks and will be confident of winning this match. The Russian, who arrived here after a run to the semi-finals in Cleveland, has won five of her last six matches.

She defeated the qualifier Varvara Lepchenko in straight sets in the last round, following up on her three-set victory over Leylah Fernandez. This is the furthest she has advanced at Flushing Meadows. Before this year, she had only once won a main draw match here.

Potapova, who has compiled a 25-19 record, earned her best-ever major result in her run to the French Open fourth round this season. Advancing to this round has moved her two places up, to 36th in the live ranking.

The winner here will face Jasmine Paolini or Yulia Putintseva for a place in the quarter-finals
