Roman Safiullin, qualifier, will hope to continue his excellent Paris Masters showing when he battles 16th seed Karen Khachanov on Thursday. The two will battle in the third round with the winner playing either Stefanos Tsitsipas or Alexander Zverev in the quarterfinals. Karen Khachanov defeated Laslo Djere in straight sets in the last round. The Russian is yet to drop a set after two rounds. He did the same when he triumphed here in 2018 and this should have him confident of another possible title run. Khachanov defeated Safiullin 10 days ago in Vienna in their very first meeting. The two were first set to battle in Belgrade last year but Safiullin pulled out of that second-round tie. Khachanov is up one place to 14th in the live ranking and has won four of five matches on indoor hard courts.

Roman Safiullin is making his Paris debut and what a first tournament it has turned out to be. The Russian produced the shock of the tournament as he defeated second seed Carlos Alcaraz in the second round. He won in straight sets to register the biggest win of his career. The feat is also only the fifth time this year that a 2023 challenger champion has upset a top-five ranked player. He should therefore be confident of progressing to the last eight at a Masters tournament for the first time. Safiullin, who has won 11 of 15 matches on indoor hard courts, has moved into the top 40 for the first time. He is currently ranked 39th in the live ranking.
