Defending Qatar Open champion Karen Khachanov will face off with compatriot and fourth seed Daniil Medvedev to begin his title defence. They will battle in the first round, with the winner facing Zizou Bergs or Roberto Bautista Agut next. Below is our prediction for this match.

Karen Khachanov has had a lacklustre start to the season. He has compiled a 2-3 record and lost his tournament opener twice.

Returning to a tournament he has had so much success in the past will have him confident of turning around his fortunes. Khachanov has made it to at least the semi-finals in his last two appearances in Doha.

Last season, he went all the way and added to his trophy haul. The 28-year-old, who has won twice before against Medvedev, has dropped to 23rd in the live ranking.

Medvedev has also been crowned champion in Doha. The world number six triumphed here on his debut two seasons ago. He did not return to defend his title last season but will be confident of rising to the crown once again.

Medvedev hasn’t had a promising start to the season and through his first seven matches, has won just four times.

His best run of results came last week as he graced the Marseille semi-finals. Medvedev has won five times against Khachanov and is unbeaten on hardcourts against his compatriot.
