Kansas City Chiefs vs San Francisco 49ers Prediction & Betting Tips - NFL
by Joseph King | in NFL Predictions
All eyes turn to Paradise for the 58th edition of the NFL’s championship game with the Kansas City Chiefs taking on the San Francisco 49ers in Nevada. The Chiefs will be hoping for a repeat of 2019’s Super Bowl LIV in which they beat the 49ers by a score of 31-20. Kansas City has a chance to win their third Super Bowl in the last five years and become the first repeat champions since the Patriots in 2005. The 49ers, making their third appearance in the big game since 2012, are seeking their first Super Bowl victory in 30 years and would love to play the spoiler in denying KC the dynasty tag. The bookmakers have San Fran as the slight betting favorites, meaning the Chiefs are underdogs for a third consecutive game in the postseason.

Kansas City Chiefs - San Francisco 49ers: Form Analysis
Kansas City looks to be hitting their peak at the perfect time as they enter Super Bowl LVIII on a five-game winning streak. The Chiefs were able to shut down the high-powered Dolphins in the first round, giving up only one score en route to a 26-7 victory. They then had to overcome a familiar nemesis in the Buffalo Bills in the next round, of which they emerged 27-24 winners thanks to a missed Bills field goal late in the fourth. Mahomes and company then faced their biggest test of the postseason so far as they were 4.5 point underdogs away to Baltimore. Playing their second straight game as road underdogs, Kansas City would neutralize Lamar Jackson and the Ravens to record a 17-10 victory. It’s been the defense that has stolen the show in the postseason so far with their 13.3 points allowed the second best mark in the NFL over the last three games.
The 49ers were arguably the best team in the NFL’s regular season, finishing atop the NFC West with a 12-5 record. However, some cracks started to appear as we approached the playoffs with the 49ers losing two of their final three games to end the regular season. What’s worrying for Niners’ fans ahead of this game is the fact that they just managed to scrape by in their two playoff games as home favorites. San Francisco was able to beat the surprise Green Bay Packers 24-21 in a game that was much closer than it should have been (the 49ers were double-digit favorites). They would then sneak by the Lions 34-31 in a game in which they entered as -7.5 favorites. With a 3-2 record in their last five games overall, there is certainly cause for concern for the 49ers.

Kansas City Chiefs & San Francisco 49ers Squad Analysis
Quarterback Patrick Mahomes will naturally be the one to watch on the Chiefs. The two-time MVP, two-time Super Bowl champion and two-time Super Bowl MVP has already solidified himself as one of the game’s all-time greats despite the absurdity of him only being 27 years old. Making his fourth Super Bowl appearance in the last five years, Mahomes is the bookmakers’ favorites to win his third Super Bowl MVP award. As for his Chiefs teammates, head coach Andy Reid will be without two players in offensive lineman Joe Thuney and Prince Tega Wanogho. They also have running back Jack McKinnon listed as questionable.
Brock Purdy has been the NFL’s feel good story of the last year after winning the starting job last season and never looking back. The 23-year-old QB held the undesirable tag of “Mr. Irrelevant” due to being the final selection in the seventh round of the 2022 NFL Draft. Purdy has been anything but irrelevant for San Francisco, racking up over 4,000 yards and 31 touchdowns in the regular season. He’s joined by the best running back in the game currently in Christian McCaffrey and a talented receiving corps including Deebo Samuel, Brandon Ayuik and tight-end George Kittle. The 49ers come into the championship game with only defensive tackle Kalia Davis named as questionable.
Kansas City Chiefs - San Francisco 49ers Key Points
- The Chiefs have won their last five games in a row, the last two as road underdogs.
- San Francisco is 3-2 in their last five games with their last two each coming by a three-point margin.
- Kansas City should have the mental edge over their opponents after defeating them 31-20 in Super Bowl LIV four years ago.
- The 49ers defense have given up an average of 24.1 points per game in their last six appearances, well above their 18.4 seasonal average.
- The Kansas City defense, meanwhile, has really stepped up and is allowing only 14.0 points per game over their last five.

Our Kansas City Chiefs vs San Francisco 49ers Prediction
From a pure value perspective, we can’t pass up backing the defending champions as underdogs in this spot. Not only do the Chiefs have an abundance of experience in the championship game, they’re also playing their best football of the season currently. Kansas City has proven able to get it done even with the bookmakers betting against them. The Niners, meanwhile, pulled out two fairly unconvincing wins as favorites in their two playoff games and are not playing quite up to the level that they were in the regular season. Take the Chiefs and the points. Our Kansas City Chiefs vs San Francisco 49ers prediction is for the Chiefs on the +2 point spread.
Kansas City Chiefs vs San Francisco 49ers - Other Interesting Predictions
Under 48.5
Backing the under in the NFL’s marquee event is usually the way to go given the pubic’s eagerness to bet the over. The under has come through in four of the last five Super Bowls, including Super Bowl LIV between these two teams in 2020. Additionally, the Chiefs defense is on arguably its best run of the season while we all know what the 49ers defense is capable of.
Chiefs to win
For all the points we mentioned earlier with our Chiefs +2 pick, the same applies to this one. If you’d rather forgo the two points pick a straight up winner, Kansas City presents the best value at just over even money. They’re playing the better football of the two teams at the moment and with their immense experience at this stage in the last five years, we believe the books have the wrong team favored.
