Second seed Frances Tiafoe will seek his second win against Juncheng Shang when they meet on Friday at the Washington Open. Shang, unseeded, has been on a roll in what is his debut at the Citi Open. The 18-year-old has won three of his four matches here without dropping a set. He lost his first set (middle set) in the last round against 14th seed Ben Shelton. This was the second tournament in succession in which he had defeated the American. Shang has won 10 of his last 13 matches. His record for the season stands at 25 victories and 15 losses. On hard court, he has compiled a 15-7 record. He lost to Tiafoe at the Australian Open earlier this season in their first encounter and will be out for revenge. Despite his success here, the Chinese number three is down three places in the live ranking to number 152.

Frances Tiafoe is making his seventh appearance in Washington. The Washington native has never made it past the quarterfinals and will hope this is the year he does so. He began the tournament with a hard-fought straight sets victory over the unseeded Aslan Karatsev. The match lasted for slightly over two hours and saw every set require a tiebreak. Tiafoe is having a spectacular season. He has compiled a 31-11 record with the majority of his victories, 15, coming on hard court. His highlights for the year however have come on grass and clay where two of his titles so far have been won. This form has been reflected in the world ranking where he has finally been able to break into the ATP top 10. He is currently placed 10th. The winner of this third-round tie will play either ninth-seed Daniel Evans or the unseeded Alexander Shevchenko in the quarterfinals.
