After reaching the Wimbledon quarter finals, Jule Niemeier can reach another one in Lausanne. This time it's a clay court tournament and Niemeier takes on fellow German Eva Lys in the second round. Both are unseeded as are all the players remaining in the top half of the draw. It's been the usual women's singles tournament with surprises aplenty. Niemeir didn't see her ranking boosted as a result of her getting to the last eight at Wimbledon due to the lack of ranking points. The German began this event ranked 109th but is up to 105th in the live rankings. Niemeir won a WTA 125 clay court tournament in Croatia last month and also won an ITF event there in May. This week has seen her return to clay and she beat Yiena-In-Albon in three sets.

Eva Lys started this week ranked 217th and had to qualify to get into the main draw. The German had to beat two seeded players in qualifying, including a three-set win over top seed Katie Volynets. Those wins ended a run of three successive defeats, with her failing to get past the first qualifying round at Wimbledon. Her form on clay is better and this year saw her get to the quarter finals of a German WTA 125 event. Lys took on Niemeir in an ITF tournament held in Croatia and retired injured after losing the first three games. Lys got to the last 16 of the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix this year but was only able to take two games off Iga Swiatek. The first round in Lausanne saw her defeat the eighth seed Varvara Gracheva. This run has seen her rise 41 places to 176th in the live rankings. The run looks like ending here though, back Niemeir to get the win.
