Elena Rybakina (sixth seed) and Jule Niemeier (wildcard) will start off their Porsche Tennis Grand Prix campaign when they face off in the first round on an indoor clay court. Niemeier is making her second appearance in Stuttgart and was eliminated in this very round in her debut here last season. The German is arriving here in woeful form as she has lost six of her last seven matches. She has claimed just three victories all season and lost her only match played on clay this season at Charleston.

The German current world number 65 is a strong performer on clay with all her titles from the ITF circuit coming from the surface and could prove to be a tough matchup for Rybakina if she settles early.Elena Rybakina is arguably the form player in the women’s game at the moment. The current world number seven has won 23 of the 28 matches she has played and has contested three finals, the Australian Open, Miami Open and Indian Wells and won the latter. She will hope that this form allows her to make her second appearance in Stuttgart much more memorable. The Kazakh was eliminated in the second round in her debut here last season. The two players have never clashed before and only Rybakina has advanced past this round before.
