Juan Pablo Varillas is participating in Gstaad for a third successive year. In his previous appearances, he produced identical quarter-final finishes. He will hope to at the very least equal this feat in this year’s edition. The Peruvian started his campaign in the qualifying rounds and is now on a three-match winning run.

He defeated former Swiss Open champion Dominic Thiem in three sets in the first round. That was only his second main draw victory at a tour event this year. It saw him move up two places to 160th in the live ranking. Varillas has registered all his 20 wins this year on clay surfaces.

This will be the first career meeting between the two and Fognini will be keen to win as he targets a second Gstaad title. He triumphed here in 2017 in what was his main draw debut. The Italian has, however, never come close to such heights again and will hope his fourth appearance gets to match his debut.

Fognini, a nine-time tour champion, began his campaign with a 2-0 win over the qualifier Titouan Droguet. That marked his 20th victory in 36 outings this year, moving him eight places to 72nd in the live rankings. Fognini has registered 13 of his wins on clay. He has alternated between the tour and challenger circuits with the highlight of his season being a quarter-final finish in Marrakech.
