Juan Manuel Cerendolo caused a major shock when he beat the top seeded Diego Schwartzman in the last round. He now takes on qualifier Hugo Dellien in the quarter finals of the Cordoba Open. The winner of this match will take on either fourth seeded Sebastian Baez or wildcard Tomas Barrios Vera in the last four. Cerendolo started this clay court tournament ranked 114th in the worl but is up to 105th in the live rankings. Reaching the semi-final will take him into the top 100. Last January though he was a career high 79th in the world rankings. Cerendolo has already won a clay court Challenger Tour event this year. In his next tournament, he lost to Dellien in the quarter finals so will be out for some revenge here. Overall, Cerundolo is 2-1 up in previous meetings. He won this title two years ago and so far this week has beaten Pablo Andujar and then top seed Diego Schwartzman in straight sets. The first went to a tie-break but Cerundolo only dropped one game in the second.

Hugo Dellien was ranked 138th in the world when this tournament began. That's well below the 64thh place the Bolivian was in six months ago. He's up to 114th after this run to the quarter finals and another seven places can be climbed if making it to the last four. His 2023 didn't start well with a loss to Enzo Couacaud in the first round of the Australian Open. Clay is his best surface though and he got to the last four in Chile but only won three games when losing to Federico Coria.  He had to play two qualifiers to get into the main draw of this tournament. He had to go to three sets in both and was a set down to Nicolas Kicker in his second match. Since then hes beaten fifth seeded Pedro Cachin in the first round and then Guido Pella in round two, both won in straight sets. This could be a tight match but preference is for Cerundolo.
