Jordan Thompson and Thomas Machac will prepare to lock horns for the first time in their careers in the second round of qualifiers of the Miami Open on Tuesday evening. The Australian Thompson had a poor start to the year and was unable to make it out of the qualifiers in Adelaide and also bowed out in the first round at the Australian Open. He seemed to find his feet thereafter and put on a good display in Dallas, reaching the round of 16. Thompson’s best performance of the season followed at the Challenger event in Rome, where he went on to win the tournament, beating Alex Michelsen in straight sets in the final (6-4, 6-2). In this tournament, Thompson beat Renzo Olivio in the first qualifier (6-2, 6-1), taking his record to 10-6 for the year, and will be looking to continue his improved form with another win in this one. 

Thomas Machac looked good in his last tournament in Dubai, qualifying for the tournament proper by beating Marton Fucsovics and Matteo Arnaldo. He was drawn against Novak Djokovic in the round of 32 in that tournament and gave a good account of himself, taking the match down to the wire before losing in a tiebreak in the final set (6-3, 3-6, 7-6). The Czech, ranked 143rd in the world, saw his best finish of the year come in the Challenger event in Manama, where he reached the quarter-final stage, eventually losing to Jan Lennard Struff. Machac beat Bradley Klahn in the first qualifier (6-4, 6-4), taking his record for the year to 9-7, and will know he will have his work cut out for him against a higher-ranked opponent in this one.
