Jordan Thompson takes on qualifier Terence Atmane in the Shanghai Masters first round. Up next in this hard court tournament is the 22nd seed Nicolas Jarry. Thompson is 62nd in the latest ranking list and will hope to continue the good form he showed in Chengdu last month. The Australian made it to the quarter finals of that tournament beating two top 50 ranked players before losing to Roman Safiullin. He lost the first set on a tie-break and then retired from the match. Hopefully all should be well now and can put in another good display on this surface. In the recent set of American tournaments, he got to the last eight in Washington and took a set off Carlos Alcaraz in Cincinnati.

Terence Atmane is 147th in the latest ranking list and had to qualify to reach the main draw in Shanghai. The French player won both of his qualifiers in straight sets including beating Steven Diaz who was the 22nd seed in the qualifiers. Altmane has spent most of the year playing on the Challenger Tour with two titles won on hard courts and another on clay. He lost in the qualifiers at Roland Garros and the US Open and last week played in his first ATP Tour main draw of the year. That saw him lose to Yoshihito Nishioka. He won the first set without dropping a game but only won six games in the two sets that followed. This is tough for him and we go for Thompson to get the win.
