Sixth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas will start the defence of his Monte Carlo title with a second round match against Jordan Thompson. The two meet for the fourth time in their careers but this will be their first on clay. We have a prediction for the match below.

With five defeats in the last 10 matches Jordan Thompson can’t claim to be having a solid campaign. His record so far in the season reads 6-5, bettered by his first round win over struggling Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard.

The next challenge for the Australian is a massive step-up and he will come as the clear underdog. In their previous four meetings, Thompson lost three times.

Tsitsipas still ranks low against the Monte Carlo Masters greats, but his three titles in the last four years place him on the high table. His journey to a fourth win started with a first round bye and he should dispatch Thompson with relative ease.

He enters this game off the back of eight wins in his last 10 matches. The Greek player has already bagged a title on the tour, winning in Dubai.

However, first round defeats at the Australian Open and in Doha present a case for his inconsistency. At Monte Carlo though, he failed at the second round just once in his six appearances. He has a 22-3 record at Monte Carlo.
