The quarter-finals of the ATP Chengdu Open sees Jordan Thompson taking on Roman Safiullin with a spot in the final four on the line. The round of 16 is still in progress making it difficult to look ahead to a potential semi-final matchup. However, second-seed Lorenzo Musetti is on this side of the draw and could be the player that either Thompson or Safiullin meets in the next round.

Thompson already upset the odds once this tournament, knocking off his fellow countryman in sixth-seeded Max Purcell in the first round. It was a relatively comfortable victory for the 29-year-old Thompson who won in straight sets 6-2 and 7-6. The Australian would then dispose of Dusan Lajovic in straight sets, this time as the heavy favorite according to the oddsmakers. Thompson comes into this matchup as the slight betting underdog despite not yet losing a yet at this tournament. The 56th-ranked ATP player is having one of his stronger years results wise on hard surfaces with a record of 21-12. Hard courts are undoubtedly Thompson’s best type as he holds a career winning percentage of 60.58% on the surface.                                                                                                                                                                                                     

Following a fine showing at Wimbledon which resulted in a quarter-final appearance, Roman Safiullin has been unable to carry over that momentum. He suffered first round exits in his next two events, both on hard courts, and a second round exit in the following event. The Russian will be hoping that Chendu is the venue where he can turn his form around and he’s certainly looked good so far. Safiullin recorded a straight sets victory over Brandon Nakashima in the first round in a matchup that the books had down as a coinflip. The 26-year-old would then go on to knock off fourth-seeded Daniel Evans in the round of 16, also in straight sets. Safiullin is now 3-3 since his Wimbledon last eight finish.
