Seventh seed Jordan Thompson and the unseeded Liam Broady will meet on Wednesday at the Hall of Fame Open. The winner of this second-round tie will play either second-seed Adrian Mannarino or unseeded Rinky Hijikata in the quarterfinals. Jordan Thompson is a former semifinalist here. He achieved this feat two seasons ago. Looking at his performance on grass, he will fancy his chances of challenging for the title. The Australian dropped just one game in his first-round win over Aleksandar Kovacevic with the victory his 11th in 16 outings on grass. Thompson, who has won 30 of the 47 matches he has played in 2023, has played three finals this year. He has won twice with both being in the challenger circuit. The win over Kovacevic has bumped him up three places to 66th in the live ranking.

Liam Broady also began his Newport campaign with a straight-sets win in the first round. The Brit defeated unseeded Shintaro Mochizuki by the loss of six games. This was his 26th win of the season and fifth on grass. Broady has struggled on grass yet again. He has lost the same number of matches he has won on the surface. This is however only the third time he has won at least five matches on grass. He will hope to keep this going and surpass last season’s tally of eight. Broady has played two challenger finals so far this season and has one title win. He is up six places to 124th in the live ranking. This will be the second time that Broady and Thompson are going up against one another. Broady won the first encounter back in 2014.
