Jordan Thompson is up against Denis Kudla in the first round of the Dallas Open. Whoever wins this takes on either Steve Johnson or fifth seeded Adrian Mannarino in the second round. Thompson is 84th in the live rankings and that's just eight places above his opponent. The Australian has had three matches this year but won only one of them. His sole win came against Roman Safiullin (winner of the Koblenz Challenger Tour event on February 5th) in Adelaide. The Australian Open saw Thompson make a first round exit, losing to J J Wolf in four sets. The 28-year-old won two Challenger Tour events last year, the most recent being last September in Columbus, USA. His first win was on grass in Surbiton, England, where he beat Kudla in the final of the grass court tournament.

Denis Kudla began this year ranked 106th and dropped a couple of places before the Australian Open. The first Grand Slam of the year went well for the American as he won two qualifiers, then lost to Oleksi Krutykh before being given a lucky loser spot in the main draw. He beat Roman Safiullin in the first round before being beaten by French player Ugo Humbert in round two. Kudla had some success on the Challenger Tour last year winning in Phoenix last March, losing that final to Thompson and some quarter and semi-final appearances in the second half of the year. He's made a better start to the year than his opponent and can get a win here.
