Second seed Adrian Mannarino will on Friday seek to extend his dominance over seventh seed Jordan Thompson when they battle in Newport. The winner of this quarterfinal tie will play either third seed Ugo Humbert or wildcard Kevin Anderson in the semifinals. Jordan Thompson has advanced to this round for only the second time in what is his sixth appearance here. He made it to the semifinals two seasons ago. The Australian has been in fine form, especially on grass where he has won 12 of the 17 matches he has played. This form has seen him win his opening two rounds here without dropping a set. He has lost only five games with four of those coming in the previous round against Liam Broady. Thompson and Mannarino have already played each other twice this season with the former winning on grass in Hertogenbosch. This was only his second victory in the six total times they have played each other. He will hope for the same outcome. Thompson is now up seven places to 62nd in the live ranking.

Adrian Mannarino has defeated Thompson four times with three of his victories coming on grass. One of those victories was in this very tournament back in 2018, the last time he had advanced this far. He defeated Thompson in their first meeting of the season in Dallas and will be confident of winning again. The veteran Frenchman has struggled for form in 2023 and has won only one more match than the losses he has suffered. Nine of his 21 victories have come on grass with the highlight of his season coming on the surface. He played his first tour final in almost a year in Mallorca. To set up this tie with Thompson, he defeated the unseeded Rinky Hijikata in straight sets, losing seven games in the process. The win moved him up to 35th in the live ranking which is the highest he has placed in two seasons.
