Greece take on Jordan in their opening match in Group C of the 2023 Basketball World Cup. The Greek side are fancied to make it into the next round but behind world number two USA. Also in this group are New Zealand who are expected to finish outside the top two, Greece are ranked ninth in the world and that's 24 places ahead of their opponents. Greece have twice finished fourth in the World Cup but both of those were achieved in the 1990s. The last tournament saw them finish 11th but overall they have a 36-25 record in the finals. Last year saw them end in fifth place in the EuroBasket tournament. They are not in good form at the moment with their last four matches all having been lost. They have been facing much tougher opposition than Jordan though (such as Serbia, the USA and Germany) and can get back into winning ways here.

Jordan are making only their third appearance in the World Cup finals. Their previous two qualifications saw them win just one of their ten games. That was against Senegal four years ago in a 17th to 32nd classification match seeing them finish 28th. Their points difference in the last World Cup was -130 and only the Philippines did worse than that. Their form is also poor at present with three of their last four matches being lost. They were beaten by South Sudan, Iran and Georgia with all being by at least nine points. Their only win was over Venezuela and that was only by two points.
