World number 90 Dominik Koepfer will take on 113th-ranked John Isner in the first round of the ATP Atlanta Open on Tuesday. The winner of this match will face the number three seed Daniel Evans in the next round. Koepfer has been excellent on the Challenger circuit this season and has already earned two titles at the Mexico City and Prague Challenger events, while he has made it to the finals on four occasions. The German’s hard work this season has seen him improve his ranking significantly, down from 233rd at the start of the year to inside the top 100 at present. With his favourite surface being the clay, Koepfer has only played two matches on the hard court, losing both, and this will be his first match since February. Koepfer’s record for the year is a positive 27-10, and he will now look to get back to winning ways after a first-round exit at Wimbledon.

John Isner comes into this match carrying the special exempt tag owing to his solid run in Newport last week. The American reached the semi-final of that tournament, overcoming the likes of Corentin Moutet and, more notably, world number 14 Tommy Paul in the third round. At 38 years of age, Isner does not play in as many tournaments as he used to and has seen his world ranking drop from 43rd at the start of the year to outside the top 100 at present. However, he still has plenty to give, as he showed earlier this year when he reached the final of the Dallas Open, coming up just short of Yibing Wu after three sets, with each set needing to be decided through a tiebreaker. His record stands at 7-10 for the year; however, he is back on his favoured surface and will be looking to bring that record back into positive territory.
