Second seeded Aryna Sabalenka faces Britain's Jodie Anna Burrage in the US Open second round. Up next in the last 32 will be either 21st seeded Karolina Pliskova or unseeded Clara Burel. Sabalenka is again in with a chance of finally becoming world number one and is in that position in the live rankings. Iga Swiatek has all the points to defend after winning this tournament last year and has to better Sabalenka's performance to stay in top spot. Aryna Sabalenka had a comfortable first round win with a straight sets win over unseeded Maryna Zanevska, losing just five games. That continued her excellent Grand Slam form with at least the semi-finals in her last four played. That included winning the Australian Open earlier this year. The past two years have seen Sabalenka reach the last four in New York.

This is the first time that Jodie Anna Burrage has reached the second round in New York. Before this tournament the British player had never got through the qualifying rounds of the US Open, only winning one out of three matches. The only other Grand Slam second round she's reached was at Wimbledon this year. Burrage was ranked 96th at the start of this final Grand Slam of the year. After her straight sets win over Anna Blinkova in round one, the Brit is up to a career high 85th. Three other matches had to be won to qualify for this tournament but this looks like the end of the road for her. We go for Sabalenka to win this in straight sets.
