Joao Fonseca will hope to continue with his impressive Romanian Open campaign when he battles fourth seed Alejandro Tabilo next. They will square off in the quarter-finals with the winner taking on Corentin Moutet or Marton Fucsovics for a place in the final. Joao Fonseca is back amongst the last eight at a tour event. It is the second time he has managed to do so in his fledgling career. The Brazilian, who made his tour debut last year, made the quarter-finals in Rio earlier this year. His excellent performance in his debut here will have him confident of advancing to the last four. Fonseca has compiled a 13-9 record alternating between the tour and challenger circuit and hasn’t lost a set here. He defeated sixth seed Lorenzo Sonego in the first round and then Radu Albot to advance to this round. The 17-year-old has moved up a massive 36 places to 240th in the live ranking, a new career high.

Alejandro Tabilo is also making his debut in Bucharest. He defeated Arthur Rinderknech in straight sets in his opening tie. As an experienced tour player and an exceptional clay court performer, the Chilean will be confident of success. Tabilo is having a strong season. He has compiled a 16-7 record and has won one title (Auckland) and was a runner-up on home soil in Santiago. Six of Tabilo’s wins have come in 10 outings on clay. Despite advancing to the quarter-finals for the third time this year, Tabilo has dropped in the world rankings. He is now ranked 42nd in the live ranking after a one-place drop.
