This time of the year is usually a good one for Naomi Osaka. Twice in the past three years she's won the US Open, so will want to be in good form leading up to the final Grand Slam of the year. Osaka is the second seed for this tournament and takes on unseeded Jil Tiechmann for a place in the quarter finals with the winne of this match facing either Belinda Bencic or Karolina Muchova. The second seed won the Australian Open this year but this is only the sixth tournament she's played since then. Her off-court problems have been well-documented and hopefully the situation will continue to improve. You sense she's much happier on court than facing journalists. This week has seen Osaka beat Hsieh Su-Wei for the loss of three games and then beat Coco Gauff in three sets after losing the first one.

Jil Tiechmann began this week ranked 76th in the world, having dropped 11 places in the latest rankings. February saw her reach a last eight and two semi-finals in consecutive tournaments. Form has slipped since then though with only two wins in her last seven matches before this tournament. Last week saw the Swiss player lose to Danielle Collins in three sets. Before that, three tournaments in a row had seen her lose to a player ranked outside the top 100. There has been better form this week with wins over Sorana Cirstea and Bernarda Para for the loss of seven games. This is a lot tougher of course, back Osaka to win in straight sets.
