World number 37 Jill Tiechmann has a tricky first round match against Alisson Riske. The winner of this tie faces 31st seed Alize Cornet in the second round. Tiechmann has been as high as 31st this year but as low as 41st. The Swiss player made a slow start to the new year, only reaching the second round of the Australian Open. Form improved when getting to the last eight in Dubai. Three matches had to be won to get to the main draw, then victories came against Elise Mertens and Elina Svitolina before being beaten by Veronika Kudermetova in three sets. That good form continued in Doha with a run to the last 16 and beating Angelique Kerber. Tiechmann lost in the first round at Indian Wells losing 7-5 7-5 to Danka Kovic.

Allison Riske has a world ranking of 50 but was down at 57th earlier this year. Riske got her year off to a strong start, losing to Madison Keys in the Adelaide International 2 tournament but didn't beat anyone in the top 30. The German lost to Jelena Ostapenko in the second round of the Australian Open after taking the first set. That was the first of three consecutive defeats for Riske. The last 32 was reached at Indian Wells, with Garbine Muguruza beaten in the second round but she again lost to Keys in the next round. There's only been one previous meeting between the pair. That was in Ostrava last year with Tiechmann winning in three sets. There's not too much between these players at present but Tiechmann looks to be in the slightly better form. Go for her to win and this may go to three sets.
