Top seed Jessica Pegula begins her Korea Open campaign on Monday against the unseeded Viktoria Hruncakova. The two will battle in the first round with the winner playing either Nadia Podoroska or Ashlyn Krueger next. Jessica Pegula arrives in Seoul after disappointingly crashing out in Beijing in the second round. The American had begun the Asian swing by racing to the final in Tokyo. She will hope for another title challenge in what is her Seoul debut. The three-time WTA 1000 champion, has won one title this year and finished as runner-up twice. All three achievements have been made on hard courts where she has compiled a 36-11 record. Her successes have kept her firmly in the WTA top five where she is currently ranked fourth.

Viktoria Hruncakova is also making her debut in Seoul. She arrives here after qualifying to make the main draw at Ningbo in her debut at the WTA 250 tournament. The Slovak has had a rocky 2023 campaign and at the moment has won just six more matches than she has lost. The majority of her 33 victories have come on hard court where she has a 15-13 record. Hruncakova has one ITF runner-up finish this year. The highlight of her season arguably is her run to the semifinals in Hertogenbosch back in July. Hruncakova, Slovakia’s number two, is currently ranked 112th in the live ranking.
