Third seed Jessica Pegula’s Canadian Open title defence continues! She will be up against unseeded Peyton Stearns in the quarter-finals early on Sunday. Read on for our preview and prediction for this match.

Pegula won both her opening matches in Toronto without losing a set. She defeated former Rogers Cup finalist Karolina Pliskova then saw off qualifier Ashlyn Krueger. This strong start to her title defence strengthened her placing as favorite to win again.

It extends her superb form this season, and aside from compiling a dominant 23-10 record, has won one title. She emerged the best in Berlin during the grass season. Currently ranked seventh in the live ranking, Pegula has contested four tour semi-finals this season.

The 30-year-old also has the advantage over Stearns, having defeated her last year in their first encounter.

Peyton Stearns is having a terrific second appearance in this WTA 1000 tournament. The American, who lost in the first round on her debut here last year, has been a giant slayer this time. She has already defeated seventh seed and former Rogers Cup finalist Madison Keys and former world number one Victoria Azarenka.

In both matches however, her opponents were forced to retire due to injuries.

Having never won against a top 10 player, Stearns will be eyeing another big scalp. Though she has had a rocky season and so far has compiled a 19-17 record, Stearns has had tour success. She claimed her maiden tour title in Rabat on clay. The winner here will advance to face Diana Shnaider or Liudmila Samsonova for a place in the final.
