Jessica Pegula, the top seed in Adelaide, begins her tournament with a second-round showdown with lucky loser Mara Sakkari. The winner will take on Paula Badosa, Marta Kostyuk or Ashlyn Krueger in the quarter-finals. Below is our prediction for this match.

Jessica Pegula made it to the semi-finals in her only appearance in this WTA 500 event last year. She will hope for another deep run as she makes her season debut.

The American hasn’t played competitively since the WTA Finals last November. Pegula, the WTA world number seven, had a poor end to her season and finished with three straight defeats.

Maria Sakkari has already played five times this season. The former world number 10 has however been unimpressive and has won just twice. One of her victories came in the first round against Linda Noskova.

Playing in the main draw as a lucky loser after elimination in the qualifying rounds, Sakkari overpowered Noskova and won in straights. The win bumped her two places in the live ranking and into 30th.

Sakkari has also won five times against Pegula. She will hope to rise to the occasion again to avoid another second-round defeat in Adelaide. The Greek number one has lost in this very round in both of her previous appearances here.
