Fifth-seeded Jessica Pegula takes on eighth-seed Maria Sakkari for the two players’ last Bacalar Group stage match in the WTA Finals at Cancun. Pegula has already clinched her spot in the semi-finals after winning her first two matches in this four player group. Should she hold on to the top spot, she’ll meet up with the Chetumal Group’s runner-up. Currently, it’s looking like her most probable semi-final opponent will be either Coco Gauff or Ons Jabeur. Maria Sakkari, on the other hand, is already eliminated from qualification.

Jessica Pegula has put together another consistent year. She was crowned champion of three different events this year: the United Cup, The Montreal Open and most recently, the Seoul Open. She came into the WTA Finals fresh off of winning the Seoul Open and hasn’t lost since the Beijing Open on October 4th. The 29-year-old managed a 2-0 win over top-seeded Sabalenka and a 2-0 win over fourth-seed Rybakina in her previous WTA Finals matchups. Pegula has amassed a total record of 58/17 in 2023.

Maria Sakkari can not advance to the semi-final of this competition after losing her first top matches. She fell 6-0, 6-1 to Sabalenka and 2-1 to Rybakina as her previous results. Sakkari’s best result this year was a tournament win in the Guadalajara Open in September. Aside from that, the Greek pro registered five semi-final finishes and a runner-up finish to Coco Guaff in the Citi DC Open. Sakkari only qualified for the WTA Finals after WTA eighth-ranked Karolina Muchova dropped out. The 28-year-old has a record of 38-24 this season and currently finds herself on a four game losing streak.
