The USA begin the defence of their United Cup title with a tie against Great Britain. This is a Group C match with the other country to play being host nation Australia. Great Britain have already played Australia and beat them 2-1. Katie Boulter got a win for Great Britain with a straight sets win over Ajla Tomljanovic. The British player also took part in the mixed doubles, teaming up with Neal Skupski but losing in straight sets to Matthew Ebdon and Storm Hunter. Boulter was ranked 56th at the start of this team tournament and is up two places after beating Tomljanovic. The 27-year-old has won one title in 2023 being successful in a WTA 250 grass court tournament held in Nottingham. The win over Tomljanovic ended a run of two successive defeats on hard courts which is the surface this tournament is being played on.

Jessica Pegula has had a 2023 to remember and it began with her being part of the USA team that won this tournament in January. Pegula was also successful in singles tournaments and won two events in a calendar year for the first time. Three other title deciders were also reached, most recently the WTA Tour Finals where she lost to Iga Swiatek. The American is ranked fifth in the world but some wins in this tournament could see her move up to fourth. The loss to Swiatek is her only defeat in the last ten matches played.
